Michael Geist notes things look much better after today's Committee meeting:
The Conservatives reversed course on plans to water down Bill C-27 in an aborted clause-by-clause meeting today that promises another 48 hours of intense lobbying on the anti-spam bill. Parliamentary Secretary Mike Lake opened this afternoon's meeting by putting the Government's proposed changes into the public record. Most notably, the Conservatives have dropped their support for exceptions for survey and marketing companies (a huge loophole), self-regulated organizations such as the Law Society of Upper Canada, and third party referrals. This brings the bill much closer to its original incarnation with some minor tweaking and clarifications.

NEWSFLASH: In a letter to The Standing Committee currently reviewing bill C-27, CAIP Chairman Tom Copeland again reiterated his association's support for The Electronic Commerce Protection Act, and came out strongly in favour of Opt-in being preserved as part of the bill.
"the Canadian Marketing Association and the Canadian Bankers Association are seeking amendments to the Bill which CAIP feels will weaken the proposed legislation and create loop holes not intended."

Chair & Members, Standing Committee on Industry, Science & Technology
Dear Prime Minister Harper,
These past few weeks have seen a tremendous amount of press coverage with regard to Bill C-27 currently in from of the Standing Committee on Industry, Science & Technology.
We have seen parties previously supporting an opt-in régime in Canada, and publicly supporting the bill in the press and to the committee change their stance.
The Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial Email, with 50,000 members has not: We encourage you and the committee to stand fast in this regard. An opt-out regime is what is made legal in America, by way of the CANSPAM act, and the United States is by far the main source of spam on the Internet today.

Canada's anti-spam bill, C-27 being considered today in a clause-by-clause reading in front of the Standing Committee on Industry, Science & Technology is under attack by groups and individuals who want to strip out key provisions of the law, and make it opt-out, along the lines of the ineffective American CANSPAM act.

Canadian Business magazine ran a surprisingly ill-informed editorial opposing bill C-27. CAUCE wrote them in response:

Mes dames et messieurs je m'appelle Dennis Dayman. I am the Secretary-treasurer of the Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial Email, CAUCE, a group representing computer-users in Canada, and the rest of North America. CAUCE thanks you for the opportunity to speak to Bill C-27, The Electronic Commerce Protection Act.
As you can probably tell from my accent, je ne suis pas Canadien, je
suis un Americain, et je regrette que je ne parle pas français.
So why is an American here today addressing this esteemed committee?
Well, reflecting the way in that spam is a pan-global problem, some
years ago, CAUCE Canada merged with their American counterparts to
better serve our constituents. Spam respects no borders, and to best
represent computer users on both sides of our mutual border, we decided
to mount a coherent CAN-AM front against the blight of Spam 2.0
